Why You Should Hate Your Parents

How does a child learn to walk?

They get up, they fall down, they get up, and they fall down. They get up and fall down many times before taking their first meaningful steps.

What do the parents of that child do during this time? Do they scold the child for falling down so many times or do they encourage them to get up and try again?

Of course they encourage the child to keep trying until they succeed in taking their first steps. Soon you have a walking and talking toddler ready to take on the world.

Then what do we do with the child?

After we teach our children to walk and talk, we spend the next 17 years telling them to sit down and shut up. What a world!

I am not blaming our parents for conditioning us not to take risks. Remember you need to take responsibility for your outcomes. However, you need to realize that our parents have helped to shape our inner voice.

As children we are told, “Go to school, be quiet, and don’t talk to strangers,” or, “Once you get good grades, go to college and get a job, then you will be successful.”

What happens?

  • We start to consider school a pain and not being in school pleasure.
  • We don’t speak up when an injustice is done.
  • We are scared to talk to new people.
  • We think that success is defined by the titles we have.

Remember, our parents want what they see as best for us, but they just don’t always know that their desire to have you avoid pain can cause you to avoid pain and stick to what is safe in life.

The problem is that safe doesn’t always make you fulfilled.

In order to change your mindset to take massive action, here is what you should be doing today:

Consider for a few moments, what you might have seen or been told growing up that is affecting your current mindset. Did your parents not start their own business because it was considered too risky? Were you told not to try new things because they were dangerous? Where you forced to do activities that caused you to link pain to activities that you just didn’t want to do?

Think about your fears, what causes you pain? Are those things really that bad, or have you been told growing up that you shouldn’t do them because it is not a safe thing to do?
Tomorrow we are going to talk about baseball analogies and why they are important to your mindset and taking massive action.
