The World’s Worst Roommate

Inside of you right now is the world’s worst roommate. The roommate is the little voice in your head that tells you, “Who do you think you are? You can’t do that!”

It is the little voice that talks of gloom and doom while you try to create your ideal day. That voice is also responsible for saying that, “It is not your fault. You are not responsible for what happens to you.”

The world’s worst roommate lives inside of you and makes it difficult for you to develop the mindset that you require to move forward with your goals.

Here is the deal with the world’s worst roommate: Realized that he or she is not bad and when you know its intention, then you are able better understand how to deal with your inner critic.

Many self help books tell you to repress your inner critic and go ahead with your life. The books instruct you to think more positively or push out the negative feelings with positive. While that is good advice, they gloss over why we have a little inner voice that makes it difficult to change.

That nagging voice telling you to not do something is trying to protect you from pain. It is telling you, “Don’t hurt me by taking a risk. You could lose things that I have grown accustom to having.”

You inner voice, that nagging roommate, is trying to protect you. It doesn’t want you to feel pain, so it avoids situations where pain can happen. For example, the voice could tell you not to seek funding for a project because, “It isn’t a good idea anyway.”

What your inner voice is saying is, “I fear rejection and I don’t want to get hurt.”

When you take a few moments to analyze what you inner voice is telling you, it will become clear that it is not holding you back so much as helping you avoid pain. When you catch it, realize that pain can be a part of growth and that is the risk of moving forward.

Tell your inner voice, “Thank you roommate for your concern, but my goals are more important than the potential for pain.”

Then get your but moving and tomorrow I will tell you where all of those feelings of pain come from.
